So we are coming to another mid-term election cycle and my district, NY District 21, just lost our incumbent, Bill Owens. He has decided that he doesn’t want to run. The race is on!
The Republicans are promoting Elise Stefanik, a 29 year old Tea Partier extreme conservative. She was a Bush aide and was on the Paul Ryan “Joe Biden Beat Me Up” debate team. She is way more conservative than the people in this district!! People in this district are hurting. The economic downturn has really done harm to businesses and opportunities in northern New York. What should a candidate be pushing? Certainly not the dissolution of Social Security and Medicare that Paul Ryan, Elise Stefanik, et al are pushing. We should be pushing job creation.
I am always astounded that companies that outsource our jobs continue to get huge tax credits in this nation. Totally flummoxed by this. In my view, once you refuse to support American workers, you should lose any government breaks. On the other hand, tax credits should be created for companies that bring jobs back to our shores, especially if they locate their companies in areas that need employment, such an northern NY. The money from companies that have outsourced our workers in the form of fair taxes could be used to create job programs in areas and fields where there is need, and to help students work off their student loan debt. This is something that I think all north country residents could get behind. Who doesn’t resent corporations who send our jobs overseas, yet still get tax breaks. And why do they? Because they contribute to the campaigns of their Congressional representatives. Maybe we should have our Congress people wear the logos of those who have purchased their votes proudly, as NASCAR drivers wear the logos of their sponsors. Good idea? There is an online petition for this now.
