Pu Ehr Tea for Cholesterol and Weight Loss – Fact or Fallacy?

lidded tea mug

I was recently introduced to pu ehr tea by a friend for mine who has high cholesterol. She swears it reduced her cholesterol by 80 points. I just started drinking it every night, but I didn’t realize one important fact about it: it has caffeine in it!!! No wonder I couldn’t sleep.

So what is the truth? DLink Categoriesoes it really help with high cholesterol? Pu Ehr tea (pronounced Poo Air) is post-fermented. What this means is that the leaves are fermented, and then they  are stored in high humidity. The ingredient in Pu Ehr that helps with the cholesterol is lovastatin, which is actually a prescription medication used for lowering cholesterol. At China`s Kunming Medical College, a study was done that compared the effectiveness of Pu Ehr tea three times a day to conventional cholesterol medication, PCIB. The Pu Ehr reduced cholesterol only a fraction less than the prescribed medication. Pu Ehr also has been shown to lower triglycerides and attacks free radicals in the body – so make sure you drink some after a hard workout!!!

It is hard to find authentic Pu Ehr tea. Some cheap, impure ones can cause fluoride poisoning. Buy it only at a reputable tea house and read the packaging to be sure it was made from wild da ye or broad leaf tea trees. It is often made from other leaves, so it is important that you check this out.

Pu Ehr is also reportedly a miracle weight loss tea!! There is a great deal of anecdotal evidence about this, but I wasn’t able to find any studies by reputable researchers that prove this. It does have that caffeine I mentioned before, so I guess if you drink enough of it, you will energize those pounds off!!

So it appears that Pu Ehr tea does have cholesterol-lowering benefits, but is not proven to help with weight loss. Still, since I am trying to get my LDL and total cholesterol levels down, I am going to continue to drink a few cups of this a day.

  1. I drink a mix of loose leaf Pu Ehr and a Robioos tea every morning. I too am working on lowering my cholesterol. Now it is the ritual of making it which I enjoy as much as the tea itself.
